There is something about Corn….For many years I have been driving down HWY 93 south to Twin Falls.  Along the way this time of the year there are a patchwork of different crops lining the highway.  One of the crops that I find fascinating is the corn.  That old acronym the corn has to be knee high by fourth of July or the crop isn’t going to make it by the fall, runs around in my head.   On the fourth of July this year the corn field was about 18 inches high about my knee height.  Now on  August 1st that same corn is at least eight to ten feet tall.  It had to be growing twenty four hours a day to grow six times it’s height in two weeks.  This morning I was able to stop by a field and take pictures of the stocks with the new baby corn just starting to show its silky tops.  I know corn is the lifeblood for the many dairies in our area but I just like the whole look the plants have with their tall tasseled heads and long flowing leaves blowing in the Idaho wind.  It is one of my favorite things about living in the country.  It is alot like sugar cane plants that grew in our yard when I was a little girl and we would cut the shoots and suck the sugar out.  I definitely wouldn’t try that with corn!  That is when California still had orange groves and avocado trees.  My grandfather owned a huge orange grove and we would play  in there for hours at a time.  Now I am more worried about the little critters residing there, ha ha.  Anyway one of the quilt designs I am working on at the moment will have a block about 18″ by 24″ of a corn field so this will be great reference material as I go along.  There is also going to be fields, barns, tractors and such.  I have the picture in my mind but haven’t found all the parts yet.  This will be one of those sentimental quilts about how I feel living in Idaho.  Of course it didn’t help when my hubby, jet the dog and I watched “Field of Dreams” the other night for the hundredth time.  That is what I feel about “Karen’s Place”.  If you build it they will come.  They turned out to be quilters from all over the world.  I am always amazed how talking about quilting is the great connector with people from all walks of life….I’ll keep you posted about this new quilt project. Lastly here is a picture of corn in my purse for my hubby who thinks corn is his only food group in the summer. K
