truckairstreammountains-001first-sketchYesterday while working in my art studio I got this idea for a new quilt which I think will be called “Art Quilt – On The Road 1”.  This art quilt design has been simmering for quite a while.  Many years ago, on a trip to Laguna, California, I had the opportunity to go to a great art show called “The Masters” and there was a mixed media picture that thrilled me.  It was an oil painting of the back of a  Cadillac convertible going down a road towards the mountains.  What was unique was the two sets of slim doll legs hanging out the back to represent two women laying down in the back seat with their legs hanging over the trunk. The artist really captured the wild abandonment of these two sets of  dangling legs. Using oil paint and then the plastic doll legs gave it a great textural aspect.   I remember thinking at the time I wish I could touch this one, but alas this was a fine art show. No touching allowed.  I know this sounds weird but it has stayed with me through the years.  My new quilt design isn’t going to have legs hanging out the back but it will include something driving down the road. Here are the pieces I collected today to make this new art design.  A picture of my neighbors truck, one of my old airstream, mountains drawn on one of my weekend trips. Then finally the sketch I will be transferring to fabric getting ready to paint. Now I can’t wait to start painting.  So follow along as this one develops.  Tonight I will probably be dreaming of the color for the truck and trailer….  Let me know what you might paint the truck and trailer…….stay tuned.
