Confessions From a Sewing Addict…Yesterday I spent the day helping my friend take a pattern off of her wrap dress.  The dress was made of a stretch knit and she was trying to convert it to cotton fabric. I was trying to explain to her what I was doing and she said it was like listening to a foreign language because she is just learning to sew.  It reminded me of one of my previous adventures. Tailoring in the Sun Valley area.  I ran my business out of my house in a tiny little room in the basement.  I had a lot of private clients but also I had a couple of cleaners who sent me their alterations and mess ups.  This taught me a lot about clothing structure and what to look for when fitting a pattern. I didn’t know at the time that I was starting to be a lifelong sewing addict.   A few of my works included wedding and bridesmaid dresses and even remodeling a tuxedo or two. I became very good at remodeling and repairing clothing. My advertising slogan was “Let me take your old worn out favorite and make it into something new”.  Another side of this business was sewing for a few interior decorators and one of my all time favorite was sewing duvet covers, pillows, shower curtains and drapes for the Buster Back Ranch in Stanley, Idaho many years ago.  I guess I am passionate about fabric and creating with it.  This makes my sewing machine my highest priority.  Each time I would change residences it was the first thing into the car.   My machine has moved around a lot over the years.  It is almost as precious as my kids. It didn’t have its own seat belt but has rested on the floor behind the passenger seat with stuff packed around it on many occasions.  I find it funny how us quilters are so enamored with our favorite brand of machines.  Anywhere from Bernina to Juke to name a few. The other day in our block of the month group I heard one of our students talk about her older machine that she isn’t going to replace till they start making them  in Germany again or something.  I feel the same way about my Bernina and making them in Sweden.  I am on my second 40 year old Bernina  because I love this model so much.  I learned to sew on my little hand crank machine at the the age of five and now 62 years later I still sew something almost everyday.  Just like today I am home on my day off and my sewing machine is at the studio and it has been calling me to come sew. My husband won’t allow me to have one at home anymore because I would get up and sew in the middle of the night.  Yes I am addicted to sewing!!! But darn proud of it.  At the art studio I get the opportunity to be around other sewing addicts on a regular basis.  They so inspires me to keep working in my passion.
