Another quilting rabbit trail. After the Desert Sage Quilt show in May my friend Joyce asked me if she could hang one of my hand painted quilts in the Twin Falls Library for six week. I gave her my “My world in a snapshot-living in a birdcage” quilt. It was an honor to be asked and I was very excited about the opportunity. Now it was time to retrieve the quilt. Crazy-quilters-Twin-Falls-S Joyce suggested that I come to the Twin Falls Senior Center where a group of women gather and they call themselves “Crazy Quilters”. We met for coffee first and then I toured their quilting room. They make and auction off quilts to raise money to support the senior center. They also raise money hand quilting quilts. I was blown away with the quilts on the quilting frames. Crazy-Quilters3 One was a very old grandmothers flower garden and then there was a very large trapunto quilt.Crazy-Quilters2Crazy-Quilters4 After meeting all the ladies working there that day I got to meet their national treasure so to speak.Crazy-Quilters8 They affectionately call her “Izzy”. She is 95 years young and is still sewing quilt blocks. She sews strip quilt blocks with a muslin foundation with her sewing machine. According to Joyce she has made thousand of blocks for their auction quilts. Oh did I mention she has macular degeneration in her eyes and sews and pieces all by feel. Well that was impressive.Crazy-Quilters7 Anyway these group of ladies love her to pieces (no pun intended). I included in this post some of the quilts hanging on their walls and what I call the memory board.Crazy-Quilters13 Crazy-Quilters12 In my art studio I also have a memory board that hangs over my computer desk and it has some of my very special things. Like post cards from my children when the travel over seas, my GAA patches (girls athletic association) when I played sports in high school. A patch from the 19th Bomb Wing when my uncle was in Vietnam. There is a picture of my webb designer Matt who is in his 40’s and I was there when my girlfriend birthed him. He is about 12 or so in the picture. Lots of telephone numbers of special people well you get the idea. In a way it is like a prayer wall of sorts. Well this is really a blog rabbit trail of sorts. Crazy-Quilters9 Back to the Crazy Quilters, it was delightful to visit with them about the ends and outs of quilting because as you know there is always something to talk about when quilting is involved….Remember the grandmothers flower garden quilt I mentioned earlier. Well I have always wanted to make one completely hand pieced and guess what I found out at Salli’s Back Porch Fabric. IMG_9755 A die cutter for the pieces and have now cut out several different fabric pieces and am attempting to sew them together…Will let you know how that is going….
