Art Studio Remodel-More room to create! There is nothing like a few painting accidents to make you realize you need more room to spread out. Hand painting my easter bunny rabbits in January, two of my bunny ears were ruined when I dragged them through my paint pallet. It was upsetting because these bunnies were fully assembled before I painted them. It almost felt like the moment when my husband said to order another she shed after I spilled coffee in my lap because of lack of workspace about a year ago. Instead of buying another she shed, I thought I can knock the wall between the two sheds out for more creative space.
I realized that when they moved the sheds together in my driveway, next to the house, the mover set my sheds perfectly lined up in the front within 1/2″ level between the two. There was only about six inches between the two outside walls. Seemed doable. Of course, I had to talk to my partner in crime, Pat Dailey first. I asked her if she was up to help me knock the wall out between the two sheds. Her response “What day are we doing this?” We set the date for this project.
My original goal was to be able to move my big work table into the new space, thus giving me more room in my painting area. The second goal was to move my storage cubbies out of the storage shed into my workspace. You can see in this picture the cubbies in the storage shed. Not very usable this way. The third goal, put another table next to my paint table so I could spread out.
Before Pat could help I needed to do some pre-work on the area. I built, insulated and sheet-rocked a wall to divide the second shed in half. This would be the back wall of the new space. Then I installed the insulation in the ceiling of the new workspace.
After building the new wall 8 feet into the second she shed, it was time to blast through from one shed to the other.
Pat helped me cut through the new door into the second shed. She also helped me put up the new ceiling in the new workroom. I couldn’t of done it without her.
Here is a picture of finishing out the pass through. While doing this project I decided to insulate both of the sheds floors.
I moved the worktable to its new home and set up a second table for more workspace in the painting area. You will notice I am using an industrial extension cord for light. This spring when the weather is better I will have the electrician run power to the new room.
It is wonderful to have these cubbies accessible in the new work space. Gradually I am going through them and organizing and labeling everything.
All of this was accomplished right before our January weather turned to sub zero. It is now a warm and cozy space and a great area to work and create in.. I love my new space. Side benefit is the ability to have visitors. LOL
That is so cool! You girls are better than “Tim, the Tool Man Taylor”!
Its looks Awesome ~~♡
Thanks Lisa, Pat and I were pretty pooped after that construction project. LOL
Wow. Congratulations! I’m amazed that you did it all yourself. Very inspiring.
Maybe you and Laurie can come for a paint day.
Oh my gosh, Karen! That’s a lot of work, but what a great work space. Good for you.
Thanks Pat, definitely more room to breath.
